I do quite a bit of hillwalking and what I love about the great otdoors is the enthusiasm of the staff when you need a bit of advice or assistance. They sell at the high quality end - North Face, Columbia, Berghaus etc. in all honesty I tend to pick up most of my gear - base layers and fleeces in cheaper stores but I don't think you should skimp on footwear or jackets and they have the best of gear in here. this is a great store and i have to say its a bit out of the way but its the best place to get whatever you need. when i use to go hiking it was very ahrd to get anything you needed especially if i was hiking and camping the local stores didnt have much and what they did have was very expensive but when you come here they have a great range of products and the staff are very friendly and helpfull and you always leave with what you needed and great advise.i would recommend this store to anyone... If you enjoy the outdoor life and maybe thinking of travelling or doing some serious outdoor sports the Great Outdoors in Chatham Street is the shop to go to. Outdoor gear fro men. Women and children and have footwear, jackets, accessories, camping gear, climbing gear and water sports wear as well as other equipment. Even if you are not the outdoors type, come in here and you will feel like becoming one! They stock a fantastic range of outdoor sporting equipment from underwater to over water equipment. The staff are very product knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Saturdays are a definitive no no if you need a lot of time to purchase (if you need a staff members expertise). Mountains in the sun or snow.

Great Outdoors is a good place for hiking gear. I have picked up a few good rainproof jackets in here over the years and they always have the major brands on display such as Berghaus, North Face, and the stuff that Bear Grylls wears. You can also rent or buy a good selection of wintersports clothes from them come time to go snowboarding or skiing. Try to go early on a sat though as it can get quith crowded in the afternoons. We are sailing.

I love sailing. If I am not deep in the mountains somewhere I am on a boat. If someone offers me the chance to go sailing in the Med. even better. Having said that if you have the right gear, sailing in Ireland can be fantastic. I was delighted to see that the Great Outdoors have recently launched a new sailing department upstairs in their main store. They now stock both men and womens sailing clothes and footwear. Great but not cheap

While I know that Mary Street and Capel Street have an abundance of cheaper camping and outdoors shops, the convenient location of this store means that I end up here when I don't have much time to spare. They have a great range over two floors. Staff are young and friendly but seem more like students than people who have a lot of experience with the outdoors. Need thermal socks, underwear or gloves , or a hat to prevent your ears falling off from snowbite, or a snow jacket and pants to be worn in freezing conditions, or a suitable bivouac or tent , or a primus stove and utensils for eating outdoors? This is the store to go to , in that case.Good selection of ski gear and equipment too. Staff are knowledgeable and can advise on correct equipment and assist greatly in making accurate selections.
