Rustic

This is a really great place, just awesome. They serve tasty wholesome food at pretty reasonable prices. It should be noted that it is not very coeliac friendly, so if you have this dietary requirement, be careful what you order, or maybe head elsewhere because you might not get the gruel experience. It has pretty basic decor, just the right side of rustic, so it kind of adds to the whole experience. I think it rally a gem, almost hidden away in the hustle and bustle of dublin life, and it... Great little restaurant located near the Gaiety Theatre. It’s a super little café type place and theirs great value for money and really good food to be found here. Its an unpretentious relaxed kind of place where the food is simple but fresh and really well prepared and presented. Love having breakfast here after a night on the town - great hangover cure. Check out their pancakes and their scrambled eggs with smoked salmon... mmm.... Read more...

Gruel is alright, but not necessarily as good as people make it out to be. It wouldn't be that often that I'd go for lunch along Dame St, but gruel is one of the better spots. The food is kind of simple and hearty - roast in a roll would be what I go for. So it is quite a nice spot for lunch. But it's not worth raving about as some of my less level-headed friends are inclined to do. "Gruel" is a very pretentious and post-moderny name in my opinion, and this achingly-hip theme is... People forget about Gruel despite it being a fantastic place to eat. It's been around for 9 years and I still know lots of people who haven't been there. Why? Amazing food and fabulous staff (they can be a bit moody, but shake it off, the food is worth it) The menus is nothing fancy instead preferring to make simple dishes like macaroni and cheese, croque monsieur sandwiches and roast chicken and potatoes. This kind of food is comforting and familiar to most Irish palates. When it comes to the... Read more...

I love this quirky place, first entering you are not too sure have you been transported to 1960s Russia especially downstairs with the chipboard, the hair dyer and the statue of religious icons on filing drawers!! Its mad, but as someone once said to me you have to be quirky to be orginal and this place is definately that!! Upstairs has all the old school desks i had in secondary school, every plate and chair is different nothing matches. its great!! DONT BRING YOUR MANNERLY MOTHER- if she... Read more...

Good soup - not so sure about roast in roll

Occasionally I stop here for lunch when I have had to go and see my bank manager and need a lift... Soup is always excellent - great big bowl of good hearty fare. Think I had smoked haddock, chorizo and chickpea chowder the last time. I am not so fond of the roast in a roll but it is a favourite of many. Decor is very basic but always bustling and being the Mermaid's little brother/sister the food coming out of the kitchen is invariably well made. It isn't the cheapest - €7 for a bowl...
