Reviewed this attraction positively 2 years ago , and it is now even better- everything is by guided tour, and new extensions have been added to great effect. The quiet room at the top where last letters/personal effects of prisoners who were due to be executed are on display is as fascinating as it is deeply moving.Display of artworks bt present -day prisoners (elsewhere of course) is enlightened , and the exhibits show real talent in some cases. My guests from the UK ranked this... Read more...

i have not been here in ten years but the last time i was there i enjoyed the day trip with my school. i enjoyed being able to go into the actual jail cells where they had dummies dressed up in prison uniforms, and the cell was reconstructed to look exactly as it would around 1916 or so. you also get to go and see the wall out in the yard where the 1916 uprising leaders were shot, the wall is riddled with bullet holes, a bit disturbing! ... Such amazing history
(04 October 2011)
by: claire r. 5 out of 5
I took a tour of Kilmainham Jail with some friends and I was amazed. I'd lived in Dublin for years and never visited but after this tour I wished I'd gone years ago. There is just so much history in the site, and you can really learn a lot about the foundation of the Irish state. The stories of the 1916 Rising leaders, and being able to see the exact cells where they were kept, was really emotional. The tour guide was very knowledgable and she treated the topics with respect, while also making... Read more...

An unmissable experience and walk back in time
(02 October 2011)
by: M. O. 5 out of 5
It is about 12 years since I took a group of teenagers here and as it was my first visit I have to say I was surprised at how much I learnt myself about Irish history. It was my first insight into a prison and its living conditions. When you viewed the small cramped cold stone cells there it really brought back to you the everyday suffering of the prisoners compared to the facilities in Irish prisons nowadays even though they complain of overcrowding it is nothing compared to the dreadful... Gaol
(27 August 2011)
by: Patrick N. 5 out of 5
Kilmainham Gaol is a place that everyone should go to see. It is one of the most interesting and fascinating museums I was ever in. Kilmainham is an old unocccupied jail with a lot of history to go with it. Admission prices for an adult cost just six euro, this really is a bargain. We got a guided tour and it was brilliant, it lasted just over an hour. It opens every day including Sundays. I would definitely recommend going here.... Read more...

The tour of this jail and its museum is a brilliant day out.Fascinating insight into Irish history and the struggles for Independence. The tour guide was great and never boring but one thing I would say is it's not for small kids they will get bored very quickly so not for the under 8s.You get to see the cells where the prisoners were kept and there is a plaque detailing the names of those executed within the jail. The courtyard at the end is a powerful reminder of how fortunate we are to be... Read more...

Kilmainham Jail Museum is a lovely day out for all the family. Its very popular with school tours, which offer guided tours around the different attractions in the jail. One cell boasts a dead pig which for some reason is a big hit with the kids. Its a beautiful dated old building going back generations in time. Lovely elegant. There is a bus stop right down from it. Also trains and luas can be got near by. Plenty of parking in the area so no need to walk miles form the car. Great day out... Read more...

Fascinating history and a great tour!
(13 June 2011)
by: Heather P. 5 out of 5
As a tourist in Dublin, I would highly recommend making a trip to the Kilmainham Jail Museum! It's not hard to get to (accessible from the city center by the 123 bus) and it's fairly inexpensive (Student tickets are two euro and it's free with a heritage card). The tour guides are all extremely knowledgeable and there's a lot of ground to cover-- sometimes I had trouble keeping up! But the jail played a major part in so much of Ireland's history and that was really interesting to learn about.... Read more...

Fascinating!
(16 May 2011)
by: Etain F. 5 out of 5
Kilamainham Gaol is located a short distance from Dublin City via public transport. The interior of the prison is stunning, it's baffling to think that anyone could live in the conditions that the prisoners did. Above some of the cells are the names of notable past prisoners, such as James Connolly and Joseph Mary Plunkett. The tours must be guided, you can't go wandering around the jail on your own for obvious reasons! The chapel is where the tour begins, and there's something infinitely... Read more...

The e6 ticket in here is well worth it.This Gaol tells a fascinating story of Irish history which leaves you beguiled and a bit spooked. The guided tour (a must) is essential to understand all the mystic of this place. Some of the stories (true) felt so unfair but we followed them with great intersted. It was astounding and the guide really knew how to tell a story in way that was interesting and yet full of facts and intrigue. ...
