Well I have to say this place always lives up to its reputation! It is famous for a very good reason. The food is always great, service is quick, staff are nice and down to earth, and there is always a nice laid back atmosphere in there. It is located on Quay st which only adds to the great atmosphere.... Read more...

GREASY PEASY.

such a handy place to pop in for something to eat if your looking for a fine greasy feed. Chips are thick and chunky fresh ones which are nice and firm ( I HATE soggy chips) so this was definitely a plus. Fish is lovely and crispy and everything is prepared there as you order, so it is fresh and tasty. Situated near the Spanish Arch you cant take a stroll on the claddagh afterwards or head towards shop street, a two minute walk and SHOP SHOP SHOP. One of the best fish and chip shops in the west... Over-Rated

Yes, yes, so I'll probably be crucified for this, however in all honesty, I really don't see the hype when it comes to McDonaghs. Anytime I've eaten there I've left with the same impression - greasy, over-rated, plain, nothing special. I really don't get the attraction. The interior is dark and dated, it could do with a revamp. The seating isn't the most comfortable either. All in all it's quite medicore in my opinion, not worth the price, there's far superior places to eat in town for the same... Read more...

I'm not sure that I would rate McDonagh's chips as the best in Ireland, but I am happy to agree that a visit to this famous fish and chip shop is a must-do for any visitor to Galway. The communal wooden tables and benches with the additional seating on lively Quay Street certainly make for a very enjoyable ambiance as you chow down on your fish with chips and sides. Whatever about the chips served here, the fish is amazingly fresh and tasty, and it's worth the visit for that alone! My tip... Read more...

Well, this establishment is world known, and has the nicest chuncky chips, and the biggest portions of battered fish u will see. They also have the quieter sit down restuarant on the right when u go in for a sit down meal. There are photos of some of there special visitors on the wall, i.e. jerry adams, and john from the hit U.S. show 'LOST'.... Read more...

Best Chips In Ireland!

(23 June 2011)

Report

by: Alan J. 5 out of 5

I had my reservations when I heard that McDonaghs served the best chips in the country and I went into the shop with very high expectations. I am happy to say that all my expectations were not only met but exceeded! They definitely have the best chips that I have ever tasted and their fried chicken is up there with the best as well. I would encourage everyone to try this place out! I eat there regularly now!... Read more...

Best fish in the west

A must visit restaurant if it's fresh fish and chips that you're after. On the face of it, it may look pricey, but when you actually see the meal in front of you and you taste it, it's worth every cent. Without a doubt, one of the best fish and chip restaurant in the West and I would recommend it to all visitors to the city. A wide range to choose from, if you're lucky enough to have a window seat during the Summer, it's the place to be....you can see everyone going by with a look of jealousy... Read more...

Yum chips

This place is legendary in Galway. Grab a seat by the window and watch life pass by on Quay St. It always seems to be filled with both tourists and locals. Spotlessly clean shop, but very busy. If you're a fan of fish this is THE place to be. Not a fish fan, but I did'nt leave hungry! The chips are delicious. The food is freshly prepared as you wait. Prices are very reasonable. All in all, very good.... Read more...

If your in Galway its a must to go to McDonaghs for fish and chips (the real chunky chips!) - there to die for! The restaurant is split in two a take away one side and a restaurant the other side. There is seating in the take away but the pier is not far away so if its a nice day take your fish and chips there to enjoy. At busy times there is always a queue but dont let this deter you. It moves quickly as staff are efficient and on the ball! Place is always clean.... Read more...

best fish and chips in Ireland

(21 February 2011)

The best fish & chips in Ireland. Don't bother with the restaurant (it's grand though), just go in and order your choice of fish and get the chips. Now some people think getting any sauces is sacrilege but I do like the curry sauce. Sit with everyone else in the casual seating and enjoy the best fish and chips you've ever had. If in Galway City, it's a must.... Read more...

Great Fish & Chips

(15 January 2011)

Report

by: Michelle N. 4 out of 5

McDonaghs has the best fish & chips in Galway. They have a restaurant if you wish to dine in, but also a take away with some seating if you wish for the casual approach. As a student, I always opted for the casual approach. Fish (Cod), Chips & Mushy peas are delicious. If in Galway City, definitely worth a visit. Its situated down the bottom of Shop St and on towards Quay St near Spanish Arch.... Read more...

Really impressed and its in such a lovely area of Galway right near the docks and the Spanish Arch but also just off shop street where the main shops are.
