Elizabeth G.

Hi everybody, my name is Elizabeth G. and I am the newest intern working for WhoseView. I am from the United States of America more specifically the giant state of Texas. I go to school at the University of Alabama where I am about to be a Senior, which means I only have one more year left of school until I am out into the real world. I am majoring in Public Relations with two areas for my minors English and Communication Studies. Until the end of July I will have the privilege of giving you the latest updates on things to do in the area and the exciting growth of WhoseView. All of this will be done through my blogs, sending out weekly  newsletters, and writing reviews on various places in the different cities.

As I said I am from Texas and I go to school in Alabama. I have been in the southern part of the United States my entire life. I have always wanted to travel abroad, especially to Ireland. I was fortunate enough to receive the opportunity to work for WhoseView by partaking in an internship abroad program. With my internship here I am able to blend my two favorite things together writing and traveling. I am addicted to everything food related and I love to explore new types of cuisine. I also find intrigue in visiting new places and planning trips.

Since being in Ireland I have realized how strong the Irish community is. Everyone always speaks of this country for how striking the landscape is, but what truly stands out is how everyone is helpful and friendly. Whether trying to find the local pub to go to after work or the best restaurant to grab a quick lunch no one has steered me wrong in their picks. In my short time here I have gotten to visit Cork, Galway and of course Dublin. Each city has a unique setting and great restaurants and pubs.

Although, this is my first time to be in Ireland I hope that this blog will not only help you rediscover some hidden gems in the city, but let me discover them for the first time with you. I am excited about the chance to share my findings on my journey of Ireland. I hope to know everything about this beautiful area and all of the wonderful things to see, do and eat!

About Me…Becca D.

February 4th, 2010

becca-12Hello everybody, my name is Becca. I am a college student from the United States visiting abroad in this beautiful country of yours until the end of April. While in Dublin I am attending the Dublin Business School (DBS). My major is in Communications with a media emphasis and my dream job is to work in Public Relations when I graduate next May. Luckily for me, I have a great internship with Whoseview while I study here. How I got an internship with Whoseview was a little bit of luck and a little bit of hard work. My school at home offered international internship opportunities and I couldn’t resist. For the next three months I am going to be writing blogs, creating a weekly newsletter, and writing reviews on places in Dublin for this amazing start-up.

I am thankful for this experience, and over the course of the next few months you can see me grow into a better intern. Which brings me to writing this blog, I figured if we are going to go on a journey together you needed to know a little bit about me.

Right now I am a junior (3rd year student) and like I mentioned earlier I should be graduating next spring. I attend St. Norbert College, which is in De Pere Wisconsin. I grew up in Minnesota which is a state that is as far North as you can go without being in Canada, so I am used to freezing weather! Dublin has been a great break from the snow for me, besides the snow crisis Ireland suffered in the beginning of January.

I arrived in Dublin on January 5th, and in the month I have been here I have learned so much. I was informed on Ireland’s unique history and have been able to travel all around Ireland. So far I have gone to Howth, Cork, Galway, Derry, and Belfast. All of these cities were great. My favorite part of Howth was the farmer’s market. They had fantastic desserts, as you can see in my picture! If you are ever in Cork I suggest checking out Debenhams. If you are like me, I always forget to bring something along that is important, and this is the place to go when that happens. They have good deals, and their style is pretty good. Plus, if you get hungry you can grab a bite to eat at their little cafe. I enjoyed Galway because of the beauty the coast brings to it. If you ever spend the night here you have to check out O’Connor’s Famous Pub. The decor of the place is unbelievable, and anybody who has been here will tell you the same thing about the famously covered walls. The atmosphere is great, you won’t regret stopping in if you get the chance! If you are looking for a good meal go to Eddy Rockets! Maybe it’s the American in me, but I always appreciate a good burger and shake and this is the place to get one. If you find your way up in Northern Ireland and are staying in Derry, check out the Rocking Chair Bar. This is a great place to go if you just want to sit down and socialize. If you find yourself in Belfast in the near future, you have to go on the UK Belfast Ferris Wheel. It costs a little bit of money, but it will give you a great view of the city.

After being in all these places in Ireland, I still love Dublin the most. The location and the people are amazing. Everybody has been really welcoming and helpful. This is a beautiful city, and I am glad I get to be apart of it for a few months. This is the ideal place to be for a young college student!

Although WhoseView.ie is just over 3 months old, we have managed to build a very content rich website, underpinned by a growing community who are contributing user generated content on a daily basis. Our goal at the outset was to create a feature rich website that allowed people to find the latest recommendations in their city, but more importantly to provide members with an entertaining environment in which to post, share and engage with friends and members on the good, the bad and the darn right ugly in terms of customer experiences.

One of the overwhelming challenges in any customer review based website is trust. Trust that both the member and review posted are honest and real reviews. One of the key ways to combat fake reviews is to allow the community control the content. We have put alot of effort into addressing this challenge and have some rather nice features that does just that. Underpinning each of these features below is “community control”. i.e. we have given the power to the community to say who is and is not trustworthy.

1. Vote on the trustworthiness of a member.

On every member’s profile page you will see the Trust Barometer, where members can vote on the trustworthiness of another member. Therefore if you read a review and think it’s “fishy”, give the member a thumbs down! On the otherhand if the reviewer is quiet active on the site in general and whose reviews are informative and well written, then a thumbs up should be given.

2. Vote on the helpfulness of a review. At the base of every review you will see a thumbs up and down. If you find the review helpful, you should reward the member by giving a thumbs up. On the other hand, if a review is “dodgy” looking or a boring 1 liner, then a thumbs down is on the cards.

3. Compliment a member. As a member you can compliment another member and send them a little note in the process. How complimented a person is will appear in the shape of a “love heart” on the people page below.

4. Member Status. We have different levels of status a member can achieve and signifies how active they are. A member can be Gold (100 reviews), Platinum (150 reviews).

5. Flag a review as inappropriate: Every member can flag a review as inappropriate, if they feel it’s using inappropriate language and is suspicious about the quality of the review.

new-picture-25

6. Finally, the most effective way to measure the honesty and trustworthiness of a review is to look at the activity of a reviewer. Every member on whoseview.ie has a detailed profile page, where you can see the complete activity of that member. If a reviewer has posted only one 5 star review, has no profile picture and their one glowing 5 star review was posted months ago, then we would recommend that you view this review as suspicious. You can make your feelings know by doing 1,2, 3 or 5 above.

While many review sites fail in this regard, we feel that all these key features, as outlined above, go along way to position whoseview.ie as a more trusting source of information.

Member Profile - Luke O’Connell

September 6th, 2009

luke-pic1 We are growing our membership every day, many of whom are becoming quiet active on whoseview. Every month we will profile a member on our blog, who other members are finding helpful, entertaining and funny. This month it’s Luke O’Connell.

In his own words; “I am a nineteen year old student of English and history in Trinity College Dublin. Two to Four nights a week I spill drinks on people in Vicar Street. I can usually be found in one of Dublin city’s smaller, more alternative ‘cafés’ - The Joy of Cha is a fave - working on his modernist, undeniably Joycean reviewing style. And occasionally, very occasionally, if you’ve checked all these places, you might want to try the floor of Cineworld, where I will undoubtedly be charging my phone”

Luke’s 14 reviews have been read 1564 times with 494 visits to his profile page. In terms of trust within the whoseview community, his “trust barameter” is 100% from 4 votes. We all look forward to reading more of Luke’s reviews and the conversations and banter they generate in the comments thread. Please keep entertaining us Luke!
