Perfect for drinking pints, over other drinks containing alcohol.
(16 August 2009)
by: Luke
"Now here's a pub," I thought as I first stepped into the famous South William St watering hole. Overpriced toasted sandwiches that I will probably buy for years to come despite their innate mediocrity, very rude managerial staff and the extreme unlikelihood that you're getting a seat inside all add up to make this one of the most charming boozers in the city centre.
The toilets - of which I can speak with authority only of the gents' - are one example of the endearing nooks and crannies of Dublin that you won't find in the guide books. Leave your nose at the bar: this is a proper jacks. The sole uninviting cubicle is probably the closest you'll come to your very own Trainspotting experience, while the trough-esque urinal is just dying to be violently and powerfully pissed upon. A urinal containing 50 dead flies would not hold half the allure that this pungent piss-pot holds for the standing toilet-goer although dead flies have been known to gather here before the night is through.
Do they have any soap? Probably not, but why should they? You don't come to Grogan's to wash your hands.
God knows what the ladies' is like. Some say it hasn't been used for 10 years, and that was the time Shane MacGowan got confused.
Once your bladder is empty and your pint has settled, take note of the regulars. To call these men regulars would be an insult to their immoveable dedication to the cause of drinking pints. Their beards may seem like well groomed auld-fella-chic. In fact, they haven't time to shave. Their stools are red hot from years of idleness and stout-flavoured flatulence. Sit up at the bar and expect a justified You're in my seat within seconds. To put it more bluntly: fuck off, they've earned their place in life, take a seat outside and come back when your shit comes in any colour as long as it's black.
Speaking of outside, almost as regular as the Regulars are the Gordon Gekko gypsies roaming around the smoking area, silently expounding their greed-is-good philosophy. Or maybe they're homeless, ignored by society and need whatever help they can get. This is a review, not a debate on the welfare state.
For the nerds or the clinically insane, a couple of chessboards are stored behind the bar and can be used over a pint. Expect idiotic foreign tourists either staring at you in wonder or, worse, asking if they can play. They understand Fuck off, invariably.
Go in, get a pint, take a piss. If it was good enough for Brendan Behan, Flann O'Brien and Patrick Kavanagh, it's good enough for you. Just don't even think about getting a seat, me auld segosha.
Luke would recommend. Luke would use again.

What are you talking about Robert? I didn't have it in quotation marks...
Robert says : 17 Aug 09
"any colour as long as it's black", not a valid quote.
