Better than sex

If Willy Wonka was an alcoholic who decided to fuck the whole chocolate thing and get into something less sexually dubious (gobstoppers clearly an excuse to groom children) and more fun, he might very well have come up with the Celtic Whiskey Shop. Never before has the expression "like a child in a sweet shop" been so applicable to a purveyor of a life-ruining substance. As off-licences go, CWS has a licence to kill.

Don't be fooled by the “Look at me, tourists, look at me!” name: CWS is a national treasure that has benefited many homegrown nights for me and my friends. With two adjoining rooms, this shop has enough wine to impregnate a school of children, but it's not until one steps into the adjacent room that the true power of the place is unleashed. I'm often struck by how regularly people walk in and privately announce to themselves “Wow!” or “Golly...” Forget the sickly pastels of Centra or even the mock-highbrow tones of O'Brien's; CWS is a veritable heaven for alcoholics and near-alcoholics alike.

Aside from the unfortunate “Celtic” of the shop's title, the “Whiskey” part is also somewhat misleading. While it's certainly their specialty, this off-licence is by no means the preserve of the whiskey-nosed snob. Gin, vodka, gin, rum, gin, liqeuers and gin stock the shelves in what is unquestionably the finest array of spirits in the capital, if not the universe. The prices are very reasonable and a member of staff is always on hand to offer tasters to thirsty customers.

One bad experience I had here, however, was one afternoon when I came in looking specifically for a litre of Gordon's gin (had to replace one I'd borrowed). I asked the man behind the counter - a fellow with an English accent who has gradually become their only employee with whom I feel I have no hope of developing a close working relationship due to his frostiness – if he had any litres in stock. He looked at me as if I had asked if they have any Dutch Gold. “Ho ho,” he sneered, “I'm afraid you don't tend to find bottles of that, or most spirits, by the litre.” I soon found the bottle I was looking for in an O'Brien's.

But, of course, that story was a rare exception to the many good memories I have of the shop. It might close at 8pm and not stock a single beer, but the Celtic Whiskey Shop is almost Yeatsian in its scope of what Ireland should strive to be as a nation.

Luke would recommend. Luke would use again.

There's a rumour that it stocked Stella once. Also why the paedophilia theme? Also you forgot to give the staff props for sleazing on tourists.
