Comfortable and Well-Designed
(28 July 2010)
by: Jamie
Being located at a lively and modern shopping centre, it is natural to expect a fine viewng experience at Movies@Dundrum. Indeed, this cinema provides a pleasant experience for all, from toddlers right up to older viewers. Its appeal starts in its setting, a descending hall where you buy tickets and food upstairs and then go into the screens downstairs. The discreet entrance to the main hall is set into the side of a circular entrance lobby, giving a sense of escaping from the outside world while walking down the passage to buy tickets. The walls and carpets are based around a sensuous theme of red, which helps to establish a calming nocturnal atmosphere - just what you need to help you get in the mood for a good film.
For hungry viewers, the cinema provides popcorn and confectionary, though I did not avail of it because I generally have a meal in the shopping centre before watching a film (not to mention cinema food is generally more expensive than one imagines). However, you can expect to encounter the usual confectionary brands, drinks, pick and mix stalls and popcorn. Ticket pricings are reasonable (€8/9 for an adult) and glasses are sold for films in 3D for 50c each, so when you've bought everything, you can begin your descent to the screen rooms.
I've been to Movies@Dundrum twice now and both times have been a pleasure (and the films weren't bad either). Each screen has seats ascending as you walk towards the back, giving a good view wherever you are in the room. Both times, there were no problems with the audience (mobile phones going off, people talking during the film, etc.) and the volume of the film was set at an appropriate level. The seats were comfortable too (no issues wth legroom), though I think the drink holders could be perched a little higher. This is only a very minor point, however.
As a general comment, Movies@Dundrum is a very family-friendly cinema and with a shopping centre right next to it, is great for a day out. I was found the the red theme of decoration and descending walk to the screens to be a particularly pleasant embellishment - as a kid, it's always great to walk into a cinema and feel all the way through it that you're experiencing something special, something you don't experience every day. As an adult, it's great to know that this feeling is not a thing of the past.
