Excellent Radio Station

(29 July 2010)

by: Jamie 5 out of 5

I started listening to Newstalk 106 three years ago because it would always be on in my brother's room (he spent all day out of the house, but always left the radio on). I immediately took a liking to the casual daytime shows, especially Moncrieff and Life with Orla Barry (though the latter was replaced by Tom Dunne, she still has a weekend show). The current affairs programmes, ie. Lunchtime, the Breakfast Show and The Right Hook have always been and still are interesting listen and a very welcome alternative to the unpleasantly depressing RTE radio.

In particular, Off The Ball deserves great applause for its consistent, lively and extensive coverage of sport; through all the more serious sporting issues, the presenters can still have a laugh on air and exchange the banter between themselves. The one thing that really impresses me about the station, however, is its ability to engage a wide range of ages and demographics. For Irish speakers, there is a show in Irish on Friday nights; for fans of cars, there's a show on Monday night; for sports fans, there are live and analytical sports shows on weekdays and weekdays; of course, there is also the news, presented briefly and informatively - and it is never read out like a retired solicitor, the way they do on RTE Radio.

The station does not leave out the listeners, giving people the opportunity to send texts in and have them read out on air - in fact, Your Call, which ran up until a couple of years ago, was based primarily on listeners calling in to discuss current issues. Indeed, the general sense I've always had of the station is an open-minded one that encourages a healthy balance of analysis, humour and reporting. Three years on, it's great to see it's still engaging and great to listen to.

Jamie would recommend. Jamie would use again.
