Generally Conservative but Never Ridiculous
(03 August 2010)
by: Jamie
I am not a person who watches TV, mainly because I got sick of the contant nonsense on the idiot box long ago. Still, RTE 1 and 2 are quite good stations compared to the others. Some of the programmes may be bland, but at least they aren't blatantly self-indulgent and attention seeking, like some of the poor stuff that flagships some of the English stations (*cough cough* Big Brother *cough cough*). RTE contains a lot of more serious programmes, but the entertaining programmes can be lacking at times. However, I'd prefer this over obsessions with dieting programmes and following the lives of famous people.
The sports coverage on RTE is in my opinion second to none. Unlike the sterile analyses on Sky, ITV and the BBC, RTE's pundits are never afraid to speak their minds and many a hilarious debate has ensued between John Giles, Liam Brady and Eamonn Dunphy. On rugby, you van always rely on George Hook ("I have fallen in love with a piece of technawlogy") to chip in with a rant and as for the Sunday Game, what's not to like about it?
The Late Late Show provides some good interviews, serious and light-humoured, and the gameshows on Saturday are satisfactory for someone looking to watch something easy with the kids on a Saturday night. Unfortunately, RTE's success with comedy is not as good as it used to be, with the Panel suffering after Dara O'Briain left and some very lamentable comedies broadcasted as testers. Some of the criticisms of RTE are really quite poorly supported and I think that as a whole, it's not a bad station.
Jamie would recommend. Jamie would use again.
