OK Newspaper, but needs Reform
(01 August 2010)
by: Jamie
As tabloids go, I actually don't mind The Evening Herald; yes, they do like a bit of celebrity news and baseless sports rumours, but I can ignore them to a major extent because unlike The Sun and The Star, The Evening Herald actually reports news (I know, it's a revolutionary concept - it'll never catch on, though!). This newspaper principally appeals to metro commuters looking for a glance at the headlines and some opinion pieces on modern culture. There are some very good journalists writing with The Evening Herald, eg. Con Houlihan and John Giles, but there are still some poor writers too; just not to the same extent as other tabloids.
The first half of the paper contains local and national news, covering court cases and regional crime, normally in a relatively neutral tone for the smaller cases. There are normally articles covering events and new openings and initiatives, along with pages a little further in for columnists to express opinions on a number of current issues. The puzzle pages are satisfactory (a couple of crosswords, an anagram game and a chess puzzle), but the page before is indignified by the presence of an astrologer who sure as hell knows nothing about my life, nor of what will happen to me in the future. It didn't stop him from encouraging anyone born in Pisces to call him for guidance. Don't worry - calls are only €2.40 a minute.
The sports section has good points and bad points. First the good - most of the pre-match news snippets are concise and there isn't that much quote-mining in the bigger articles. Most of the articles are reports as opposed to opinion pieces, the latter of which we know can become very dodgy indeed when someone simply proclaims their opinion as fact. On the subject of discursive articles, John Giles has been writing sports articles of a high quality for years, but I do feel that he occasionally lets himself down with unfounded swipes at some of the high-profile managers (though admittedly some of them deserve it!) Paul Hyland, however, is unduly pessimistic and his articles at best are OK, but at worst littered with deductive fallacies and a personal dislike of a player. The sports section, overall, is good.
The opinion pieces in the middle of the paper are generally not too controversial, but occasionally one of the journalists write infuriatingly patronising articles, some of which are factually incorrect and poorly evidenced. Aside from these, a good discursive piece always provides a relaxing read and I often find the quotidienne musings of most of the journalists interesting as long as they are expressed calmly and they involve analysis. There is definitely room for improvement in The Evening Herald, as some of the journalism is very questionable, but overall, it's one of the few papers I believe justifies its price tag.
Jamie would recommend. Jamie would use again.
