Very High Standard of Journalism
(02 August 2010)
by: Jamie
Fittingly, the Irish Times Magazine is of a similar high quality of The Irish Times itself; released free with The Irish Times on a Saturday, The Irish Times Magazine gives a good overview of the arts, cookery, modern culture and new Irish initiatives. It contains also opinion pieces on a range of topics (some light-hearted, others a little serious) as well as some good things to do when going out in the evening time.
There is normally a number of book reviews of recently-released books, as well as new music albums and films. Certainly when looking for a good opinion on one of these, I prefer The Irish Times Magazine as there is less of a tendency to use sensationalism and judgementalism, two flaws that make it difficult to take reviews from certain other sources seriously.
I don't read The Irish Times Magazine that often anymore, but about five years ago, there was a rather funny called "Irishology" by Shane Hegarty, which would focus on a trend in Irish culture and give a humourous spin on it. I don't know why they discontinued that section; he had a couple of funny pieces on cinemas and online gambling. Still, you can generally find more general commentaries on Irish culture in the rest of the magazine.
The cooking recipes are particularly good, providing some fresh ideas in a country where processed food is the norm much more than it used to be. Though I'm generally highly skeptical of Irish cuisine, the Irish Times Magazine does focus in on the healthier side of Irish cooking. For a read on a Saturday, The Irish Times Magazine is a good way of catching up on new trends without having pictures of famous people shoved in your face on every second page.
Jamie would recommend. Jamie would use again.
