Materials and choices

One question I get asked more than most is whether to go with Indian sandstone or Yorkstone, and honestly, it depends on the garden, the drainage run and what the customer wants underfoot. Indian sandstone suits a lot of Essex gardens well, it’s warm in tone and it lays true when the sub-base is prepared correctly.

For projects that call for something more distinctive, we have specified Liscannor flagstone on a handful of patio builds, and it brings a texture and character that manufactured slabs simply cannot replicate.

How we approach the work

A mortar bed laid to the correct fall, the right compacted sub-base depth, edging restraints set before anything else touches the ground. These are not optional steps, they are the difference between a patio that holds for fifteen years and one that shifts after the first winter frost.
